How to plan for perfect sunlight for your photo-trips

Today i went out to enjoy the perfect weather (almost spring-like here in Vienna) but also take some photos for Prager Fotoschule.

I tried to get two assignments done:

  • a picture with a strong pattern / repetition in it
  • a picture where a shadow is the main requisite.

Especially for the shadow picture i need to have the correct angle of sunlight.

For this you can use The Photographer's Ephemeris. This excellent tool shows you sunrise, sunset, moonrise, moonset and also the current position of the sun.

The small orange line is the current position of the sun. As you can see on the screenshot i used this to estimate the angle of the sunlight at the pillars of the Austrian Parliament. You can also view the azimuth and altitude of sun/moon for any time of day/night.

The desktop Windows/mac versions are free but they do charge for the Android, iphone and ipad version.
